Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments

You would have lost a lot if you have never visited a chiropractor. Countless number of people can testify to the benefits of chiropractic care. This is particularly true considering the fact that Chiropractic Adjustment has no need for drugs or surgical operation when a patient is being treated.

Some of the health complication chiropractic adjustment has been found to take care of include:

  • Pain in the Neck
  • Infection of the Ear
  • Scoliosis
  • Pain in the Back
  • High blood pressure
  • Prevention of surgery
  • Asthma

Not really everybody understands the true meaning of chiropractic adjustment nor really knows the kind of training chiropractors go through. In this post, we shall be discussing the history and philosophy of chiropractic adjustment.

Philosophy behind chiropractic adjustment

One basic distinguishing feature that sets chiropractic treatment apart from other medical procedures is that it does not use drugs. The basic principle behind chiropractic practice is the body’s ability to heal and restore itself when the condition is right. The actual job of a chiropractor is to create an environment that will stimulate self-healing of the body.

Vertebral Subluxation

Basically, chiropractic practice revolves around vertebral subluxation. The simplest definition of this term is the use of pressure generated mechanically to irritate the nerves and spinal joints. For instance, Harvey had a bad positioned nerve which impeded is hearing senses. What Palmer actually did was to compress the nerve thus freeing him from “neurological insult”.

In another person’s case, it could be sciatica or gastrointestinal complications. The truth is that majority of the cells, tissues and organs within the body get altered as the nerve finds its way across the spinal column. The side effect attributed by this movement is mind boggling.

Why Chiropractic Adjustment is right for you

There are several factors behind vertebral subluxation, and I will be sharing some of them here

  • A misaligned vertebra bone which could be as a result of a fall (macro trauma)
  • A general misalignment in the entire spinal column which could be as a result of bad posture
  • Poor diet or unsafe drinking water can lead to inflammations and psychological stress which will in turn lead to vertebra subluxation
  • Destructive changes in the in the intervertebral discs or spine
  • Tightness in the vertebra that tend to draw it out of place.

Why good posture is very important

The sad news is that most people in the Western hemisphere have jobs that require them sitting down all day long. This unhealthy habit affects the spinal cord and as well as one’s posture. Another bad habit that affects our posture is finding it difficult to stay away from our mobile devices and PCs.

Most people have lived a great portion of their life bending their backs and sticking out their necks. The medical term for this is “forward head posture”. Results obtained from medical research reveals that whenever one’s head moves away from its true center of gravity, the person’s neck will receive a stress of 10 pounds. When you consider the long term consequence of this, you will find reasons to be worried.

During a chiropractic session, one of the first things a chiropractor will first check is the extent to which a patient’s head has moved away from its true center of gravity.

10 Major Chiropractic Studies and Research

It isn’t enough to look for an experienced chiropractor when finding solutions to damages caused by bad posture that have accumulated over the years. You need to adopt a proactive approach of learning the benefits of chiropractic when attending to your health needs.

Chiropractic healthcare is next to none when it comes to treatment of neuromuscular based health complications. Over the past decade, I have practiced chiropractic healthcare and encourage friends and families to give it a try.

I understand you can’t just take what anybody tells you. So below are some medical findings that demonstrate the true benefits of chiropractic healthcare

  1. Sciatica

From a research finding published in European Spine Journal, it was discovered from a clinical test done sometime last year that patients had a 72% chance of recovery from Sciatica when treated with chiropractic as against 20% for physical therapy and 50% from corticosteroid treatment

More also, it was found that chiropractic treatment is more effective in handling health complications like back pain

  1. Pain in the lower back and neck region

A test was conducted on 183 patients each suffering various degrees of neck pain. From publication made in British medical Journal way back in 2003, some of the patients were treated with manual therapy (spinal mobilization), some physiotherapy (regular exercise) and others general care which included education, counseling and use of drugs. The entire study lasted about a year.

Patients that had their case treated with chiropractic showed signs of speedy recovery when compared with other healing techniques. Patients also enjoyed lower cost of treatment. Physiotherapy and general care cost three times as much as chiropractic.

In a separate study revealed in Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, it was found that patients that suffered acute back pain recovered fasted sometimes within one month period when treated with chiropractic than other medical alternatives. Patients were more satisfied with their treatment. More than 56% of the patients attested that they had been relieved from the pain they suffered on their back when treated with chiropractic, while just a meager 13% of patients treated with alternative therapy gave the same testimony.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative medicine once conducted a study to ascertain the efficiency of different medical techniques in the treatment of pain in the neck. 272 random patients were picked, and were split into a group of three with each group receiving either spinal manipulative therapy administered by a well-trained Doctor of chiropractic, use of analgesic like muscle relaxants and narcotics, and finally exercise therapy.

By the end of 12 weeks into the study period, 57% and 48% of patients treated with chiropractic and exercise therapy respectively reported experiencing 75% reduction in the pain they felt as against 33% of patients that received drugs.

After a year, 53% of patients in the first two categories experienced just 25% of the initial pain they felt, while 38% of patients who took drugs gave the same testimony.

  1. Headaches, migraine and tension

After back pain, chiropractic practitioners have developed dexterity in treating both acute and mild headaches. As it stands now, more than 230 medical publications have all agreed that chiropractic not only cures but also suppresses the development of headache and migraine.

One particular study revealed that 22% of patients who were treated with chiropractic experienced a 90% decrease in the intensity of their headache, while about 49% reported experiencing 49% drop in the intensity of the pain they felt as a result of the headache they suffered.

When it comes to treating mild and acute headache, no other medical procedure does it better than chiropractic

  1. Ear infections and Colic

Study findings conducted in 2012 and published in Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics revealed that Chiropractic treatment provided great relieve to patients suffering from colic symptoms.

As it stands now, only a small clinical study has been conducted to understand the effect of chiropractic on children. However, a good number of clinical studies have revealed that children who suffered from ear infections, colic and acid reflux improved greatly after their first few sessions of chiropractic treatment.

Different theories have been put forward to explain this. But the more pronounced one is that the nerve that crisscrosses the brain and the gut as complicatedly connected, thus making them more prone to neurological insults chiefly caused by vertebral subluxation.

  1. Neurological Conditions

As of recent, an interesting research is being done through the use of vertical MRI. It was found through scans that upper cervical adjustment has some level of effect on the brain. This is truly amazing.

It was discovered that blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid flow increased remarkably after chiropractic treatments. Scientist also found that chiropractic helped reverse cerebellar invagination (a condition that is caused by the fall in cerebellum beyond the skull line) and also helped flush out brain plaquing (found mostly in patients suffering from sclerosis)

You can read up Montel Williams’s story. He is a popular TV presenter who once suffered MS, only to get his health back after learning the benefits of chiropractic

  1. Blood pressure

George Bakris, a renowned specialist in hypertension released his research findings in Human Journal of Hypertension. In the Journal, he asserted that chiropractic produced similar results as taking two blood pressure lowering drugs. He went further that all a patient needs is one chiropractic session in 6 months so as to keep his blood pressure low.

One of the benefits of chiropractic is that it yielded lower blood pressure when compared with other medical alternatives. Several other studies that have been conducted all attest to this.

  1. Prevention of surgery

Chiropractic has helped patients with acute back pain stay away from surgery. Recently, a publication done on Journal of the American Medical Association advises people suffering from severe back pain to first try chiropractic before going to see a surgeon

  1. Shoulders that a frozen

Research was conducted last year to find out how patients suffering from severe frozen shoulder responded after being treated with chiropractic.

A total of 50 patients were examined in the course of the research. 16 patients recovered completely, 25 experienced 75% to 90% improvement, 8 experienced 50 to 75% improvement, while only one person experienced 0 to 50% improvement.

  1. Scoliosis

Chiropractors have found a way of treating scoliosis without the need of braces or surgical operation. A great number of people who had chiropractic done on them experienced 10 to 30% reduction in their scoliosis curvature. It is widely stated that one of the benefits of chiropractic is the effectiveness in alleviating the pain and discomfort that comes with scoliosis, however, no studies as of now can document this.

  1. Athletic Performance

Have you wondered why great athletes like Joe Montana, Michael Phelps and Jerry Rice are always receiving chiropractic treatment? More than half of the teams in NFL have experienced chiropractor on staff.

Considering the fact that chiropractic is absolutely painless, it is unsurprising that many athletes depend on it for improved performance. Some of the benefits of chiropractic are as follows

  • Strengthens one’s immune system
  • Improves pulmonary function
  • Hinders the development of inflammations
  • Relieves tension in the muscles
  • Boosts one’s energy
  • Impedes stress

Most of the studies done so far show that the benefits of chiropractic improves body functioning in all ramifications.

What chiropractic actually does to the body is to stimulate accelerated self-healing. This allows your immune system find ways of keeping you in good shape both mentally and physically.
