Does Sitting or Driving Make Your Sciatica Worse?
You feel relatively comfortable while moving around, but after 20 or 30 minutes in the car, discomfort starts in your lower back or buttock.
Then it travels.
For some people it’s an ache down the back of the thigh. Others describe burning, tingling or numbness extending toward the calf or foot.
Long commutes, desk work and extended sitting can be especially frustrating when you’re dealing with symptoms commonly described as sciatica.
At Backsmart Health Chiropractic in Cumming, Georgia, Dr. Gregory King evaluates patients with lower-back and leg symptoms to determine what may be contributing and whether conservative chiropractic treatment is appropriate.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica isn’t a single disease.
The term describes symptoms involving the sciatic nerve pathway, typically affecting the buttock and leg. Symptoms can include pain, burning, tingling, numbness and, in some cases, weakness.
Several conditions can produce sciatica-like symptoms.
These may include irritation of a lumbar nerve root associated with a disc problem, degenerative changes that reduce available space around a nerve and other musculoskeletal conditions.
That distinction matters because two people who both say “I have sciatica” may not have exactly the same problem.
Why Can Sitting Aggravate Sciatica?
Your spine, hips and surrounding tissues experience different mechanical demands when you’re sitting than when you’re standing or walking.
For some people with lumbar or nerve-related symptoms, prolonged sitting is particularly irritating.
That’s why the pattern matters.
Dr. King may ask:
Does sitting make symptoms worse?
Does standing relieve them?
Does walking help?
Does bending forward change the pain?
Does coughing or sneezing reproduce symptoms?
How far down the leg does the discomfort travel?
These details help build a much more useful clinical picture than the word “sciatica” alone.
Why Is Driving Often Worse Than Sitting at Home?
Driving combines several potential aggravating factors.
You’re seated for a prolonged period, movement is limited and one leg repeatedly operates the pedals.
You also can’t simply change position whenever you want.
A long commute on GA-400 can therefore feel very different from sitting at home where you’re free to stand and move every few minutes.
Your seat position can matter too.
Sitting extremely far from the steering wheel may require you to reach with your legs and arms. Sitting too close can create its own uncomfortable position.
Aim for a position that allows you to operate the pedals and steering wheel comfortably without straining or reaching.
Is Pain in the Buttock Always Sciatica?
No.
Pain around the buttock can arise from several structures and doesn’t automatically mean that the sciatic nerve is involved.
That’s one reason self-diagnosing based exclusively on where you hurt can be misleading.
A careful examination considers whether symptoms remain localized or follow a neurological pattern into the leg.
What If I Have Numbness or Tingling?
Tell your provider.
The location of neurological symptoms can be important.
Notice whether numbness or tingling reaches the thigh, calf, heel, top of the foot or particular toes.
Also report weakness.
Difficulty raising the foot, walking normally or performing activities that previously felt easy deserves appropriate evaluation.
Should I Stretch My Sciatic Nerve?
Be careful with aggressive stretching.
What feels like a “tight hamstring” can sometimes accompany nerve-related symptoms. Forcefully stretching into increasing leg pain isn’t automatically beneficial.
Exercise can be an important part of managing many types of low-back pain and sciatica, but the appropriate movements depend on the clinical presentation.
A better approach is to determine which movements improve symptoms and which consistently aggravate them.
Can Chiropractic Care Help Sciatica?
Some patients with low-back and radiating leg symptoms may be appropriate candidates for conservative chiropractic care.
Treatment should depend on the examination rather than applying the same adjustment or exercise program to everyone who reports sciatica.
At Backsmart, care may include chiropractic adjustments, appropriate therapeutic exercise, rehabilitation and other conservative approaches depending on the patient’s findings.
Dr. King can also determine when additional evaluation or referral is warranted.
Do You Need an X-Ray or MRI?
Not everyone with lower-back or leg pain automatically needs imaging.
Imaging decisions should be guided by the patient’s history, examination, neurological findings and other clinical considerations.
Backsmart Health Chiropractic has digital X-ray capability when X-rays are clinically necessary.
MRI may be appropriate in certain circumstances, particularly when significant neurological findings or persistent symptoms warrant further investigation.
Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Seek prompt medical attention if back and leg symptoms are accompanied by significant or progressive weakness, bowel or bladder dysfunction, numbness in the saddle/groin region, significant trauma, serious systemic illness or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms.
These require a different level of attention than routine uncomplicated back pain.
Five Things to Notice Before Your Appointment
Pay attention to:
- Where does the pain begin?
- How far down the leg does it travel?
- Does sitting make it worse?
- Does standing or walking make it better or worse?
- Is there numbness, tingling or weakness?
Those details can provide valuable information during your examination.
